NEW YORK — The cost of a fluoroquinolone antibiotic can be a daunting task if you’re struggling to afford a drug you’re prescribed. But with a new program designed by AstraZeneca, which already sells the drug in the U. S., patients can find a way to save money without compromising their health.

The cost of fluoroquinolone antibiotics like Cipro and Nexium can be as low as $7 to $20 per prescription, according to the company, and patients can save up to $3 per prescription if they can afford the higher price.

The program, called the Cipro Discount Card, offers consumers the opportunity to save up to 80 percent on a single prescription filled at a pharmacy. This includes those who qualify for the card, and those who have a valid prescription from their doctor. The pharmacy will ask patients who fill prescriptions who have been prescribed for them to give them a discount card, which will allow patients to save up to 80 percent on prescriptions.

“This program is an important step in helping patients save on their prescription drug costs,” said Dr. Michael Friedman, president and CEO of AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, which is the U. S. distributor of Nexium and Cipro.

The program also includes patient assistance programs, which will help patients make up for lost prescription drug costs, and offers discounts on the cost of prescription drugs, such as Cipro, Nexium and Prilosec.

“This is one of the first steps in helping patients save money on their medications,” said Dr. Paul Gershon, director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research at Northwestern University, who leads the program. “We have already seen a growing number of patients who are struggling with their medications.”

For patients who qualify for the Cipro Savings Card, the plan will help them save up to 80 percent on all their prescriptions, regardless of their insurance coverage. But the savings can vary based on their age, income level and the cost of prescription drugs they need.

“These savings are important in helping patients to access the drugs they need,” said Dr. S distributor of Nexium and Cipro. “We have already seen a growing number of patients who are struggling with their medications. “I’m so grateful for my patients, who have been able to save on their medications and have been able to afford the cost of the medications,” said Friedman. “It’s a great opportunity to get patients to talk to their doctor and have them fill the prescriptions they need.
